Bealtaine Eco Print Workshops

Bealtaine Eco Print Workshops

Join Dublin Print Club, at FLUX D2 this May Bank holiday for some creative, nature based workshops in celebration of Bealtaine.

They say that herbs collected and potions brewed at Bealtaine have greater powers and potency! That’s why we think this a great time to have a radical rethink of how we work, and to set intentions to work with greater care, and stronger connections to the land around us, whether we live in the wilds or in urban settings where cracks in the concrete host micro jungles.

Celebrating Bealtaine, the ‘Return of the Light’ and the beginning of the summer, Dublin Print Club Studio will host a mini festival exploring Botanicals in Printmaking with visual artist and master printmaker Karen Browett. We are offering a weekend of Bealtaine themed workshops exploring more ecologically sound and lopwer impact ways of making art, using cyanotype and anthotype processes, both of which are used to create ‘photogram’ styled prints.

Introduction to Cyanotype and Toning your Prints

Dublin Print Club Studio

Saturday 2nd May, 2-6pm, €80 (discounted weekend ticket, both workshops €120)

Cyanotype is a low toxicity iron based print process which is created using sunlight. Typically used to create botanically accurate prints of plant life, it can also be effectively used to reproduce photographs, objects and drawings in a rich blue tone. These blue prints can then be toned to other colours by soaking in botanical potions.

Learn all stages of cyanotype making as part of this creative workshop, covering the basics of both direct printing from plants to the making of a digital negative. Participants will have the opportunity to make a number of prints experimenting with techniques and layouts and will learn everything they need to create further images at home using the process.

Participants will also learn to create toners from botanical sources and simple kitchen supplies. . With these witchy brews we will shift the colours of our prints, opening up the potentials for a wider palette of finished prints. Each participant will leave with some finished prints and knowledge of materials and processes to continue their experiments following the workshop.

Anthotype Eco-Printmaking

Dublin Print Club Studio

Sunday 3rd May, 2-5pm, €60 (discounted weekend ticket, both workshops €120)

An anthotype print is the ultimate DIY print process! Anthotype is a sustainable print process which makes use of plants people deem overly abundant weeds and kitchen waste, transforming them into something beautiful. This workshop will provide an introduction to the process and everything you need to equip you to develop your own prints at home and is suited to beginners or artists looking to explore eco friendly approaches to making art.

Prints using this process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few months to develop, bringing a kind of magic into your printmaking, the anthotype process creates soft, ethereal and one off photogram type images. This process really is an exercise in slow art making and letting go!

Participants will learn about the process and make a number of emulsions together. We will talk through creating film positives from photographs as well as composing prints from botanical samples. Participants will explore different plants that could be used, what to/not to collect and how to find anthotype emulsion in any scenario. We will work with pestle and mortars to create a library of coloured scented magic imbued sheets of summer potential to use in our work.
