	investigative Berwick\nStreet Film Collective were given exclusive access 
	to Belfast's Catholic\ncommunity. The testimonies and footage of life 'beh
	ind the wire' that they\ncaptured amounts to a grim but arresting picture 
	of Northern Ireland at the\nheight of The Troubles. Ireland - Behind the W
	ire is a now regarded as a\nlandmark of the 1970s oppositional cinema move
	ment.\n\n\nAs well as using film to convey alternative viewpoints to those
	 aired via\nestablished news channels\, the Collective embraced formal exp
	eriment\, perhaps\ninfluenced by the work of Jean Luc Godard and Chris Mar
	ker. The film signalled\nthe beginning of what is often called the reflexi
	ve tradition in documentary\nfilm in the UK. It may seem surprising that t
	he BFI Experimental Fund committed\nstate funds to a film that so outspoke
	nly opposed government policies and\npractices. One of the Collective's fo
	unding members\, Marc Karlin\, later revealed\nthat the Special Branch sei
	zed some of their original footage and the Ministry\nof Defence pressurise
	d ACTT\, the film technicians' union\, into erasing some of\nthe frames."
