DESCRIPTION:The New Obsolescence programme at Fire Station Artists’ Studios
presents a sound\nworkshop with Ed Devane exploring improvisation and per
formance using modular\nsound software\, as part of Beta Festival 2026.\n\
nSoniphorm Centipede is a free to use\, browser-based\, real-time sound pr
ocessing\nenvironment. Its modular nature makes it configurable in many wa
ys: create\nrhythmic patterns from sounds from your hard drive or recorded
live\, process an\ninstrument with effects\, and improvise sound with oth
ers.\n\nThe aim is to facilitate human players of realworld instruments to
interface\nwith advanced audio processing techniques: trigger samples wit
h your voice\;\ncreate responsive sequencers for call and response human-m
achine interaction\,\nnetwork processing with other users\, and more.\n\nC
ourse Outline:\n\nThe day will be spent exploring the software\, getting s
et up with audio\ninterface\, microphone\, and speaker\, and experimenting
with instruments and\nobjects. \n\nExample patches (the name given to the
organisation of modules to create a\nparticular outcome) will be provided
\, and participants will be encouraged to\nconceptualise their musical ide
as so we can solve the problem with new patches. \n\nIf you’re familiar wi
th node based patching software like Max MSP then you’ll\nhit the ground r
unning. If it’s all new to you that’s ok too\, there will be\nplenty of ti
me for questions\, experimentation\, and unexpected results.\n\nAll softwa
re used in the workshop is free and open-source or freely available.\nPart
icipants can continue using these tools independently after the workshop a
t\nno cost.\n\nRequirements:\n\nTo be a professional visual artist (all ou
r facilities are subsidised by the\nArts Council of Ireland and reserved f
or artists\, we cannot accommodate\ncommercial\, and non artist-led projec
ts).\n\nTo be computer literate and reasonably comfortable with editing so
ftware. No\nprior audio experience is required.\n\nTo use your own PC or M
ac laptop (Fire Station has a limited amount of Mac/PC\ndesktop computers
and these can be made available on a first come first served\nbasis)\, wit
h Chrome browser installed\, and a pair of headphones. If you own a\nsmall
audio interface that works with your laptop\, bring it as well.\n\nIf you
play an instrument that’s practical to bring\, please bring it along!\n\n
About the Tutor:\n\nEd Devane is a sound artist\, instrument builder\, and
workshop facilitator based\nin Donegal\, Ireland. He is the founder of So
niphorm\, a practice dedicated to\nexploring the relationship between soun
d and form through creative tools\, audio\nequipment\, and educational exp
eriences. Ed has extensive practical experience\nsupporting technical and
creative projects at NCAD Dublin\, University of\nLimerick\, and many othe
	r organisations including Science Gallery\, The Ark\, DCCI\,\nand Creative
Ireland. He operates the Soniphorm Soundcraft Studio in Donegal.\n\nCours
